HEMA ’26 Staff Members- Masotto,Gilbert

These dedicated professionals support students through rehearsals, performances and travel abroad, ensuring each participant has a meaningful and unforgettable experience.

Ryan Masotto

Ryan Masotto is a grades 5-12 orchestra director for the Shawnee Heights School District, the director of the Topeka Youth Orchestra’s Chamber Orchestra, violist in the Topeka Symphony Orchestra, private lessons instructor and freelancer. He received his undergraduate degrees in music education and viola performance from Washburn University. Then went on to the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where he received his Master of Viola Performance. While maintaining a busy teaching and performance schedule, Ryan is supported by his wife, Mikayla, and two daughters, Ellie and Baylee.

Jay Gilbert

Jay W. Gilbert is a professor emeritus of music at Doane University in Crete, Nebraska. In 2022, he retired after 42 years of teaching in both public schools and university. During his 29-year tenure at Doane, he led the symphonic wind ensemble, concert band and Tiger Pep Band, and directed the Blue River Community Band for twelve years. He also served as chair of Doane’s Music department for 24 years. He remains active as a guest conductor and clinician throughout the US and Canada and has enjoyed international recognition as a composer and arranger. Dr. Gilbert received recognition from Doane, including the Outstanding Teacher of the Year award twice in his career from the Student Congress and the Zenon Hansen Leadership Award for his outstanding contributions to the institution. In 2024 he received the Donald Lenz Outstanding Band Director Award, from the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association, for his work in support of better bands in Nebraska. He is also a recipient of The Bryan R. Johnson Distinguished Service Award from the Nebraska Music Educators Association, and special recognition from the Kansas State University Band program.
